Experimental Rotary Engines: Model 32
Experimental Rotary Engines: Model 32
This follow-up to my previous videos summarizes the current design for the benefit of those that are experimenting with Model 30 based engines. Model 32 is not yet finished but most of the mechanics are in place. It's been dry run & tested for compression, friction & wear. Performance so far is superior to Model 30. Completing the control electronics & firmware will require more time. Model 32 is similar to Model 30 (previous videos) except that: the rotors are steel lined with graphite; the vanes pivot (rather than slide); vane engagement is electronically controlled; seals, accuracy & fit are improved; parts count & reciprocating masses are reduced; rotor phase angle is adjustable to provide expansion ratios approaching 30:1; compression ratios are adequate for burning vegetable/diesel oil using direct fuel injection; the Lexan cover is replaced by a dimensionally more stable aluminum reinforced plate glass. Fins will be routed into the exterior body as needed for cooling. I should finish evaluating Model 32 by fall '07. The next design (Model 33) inherits much from Model 32, except that it uses 1 rotor & 2 vanes. The purpose of this open source program is to develop more fuel efficient ICE's capable of operating on a variety of fuels for the benefit of our environment, our economy & our future. This material is offered freely in the hope that it may be useful & inspiring to tinkerers world-wide wishing to improve Internal Combustion Engine technology. -Dave

Mechanics of masonry
Mechanics of masonry
Transmission photoelasticity on scale models is shown to disclose the stress distribution within dry masonry walls. This distribution is found to be complicated by unilateral joints between elements, where 'randomness constrained within a geometrical scheme' of contact points occurs, so that stress percolation results highly localized, evidencing 'unloading islands' in a 'stress stream'. Experimental results are explained both proposing a micromechanical model (based on a form of random cascade transmission of forces between bricks, which includes random coalescence additionally to random branching) and applying a phenomenological description (based on the extreme orthotropy of the equivalent homogeneous material). ssmg.ing.unitn.it

Steam Jet powered experimental boat -Model Boat Mayhem
Steam Jet powered experimental boat -Model Boat Mayhem
Last weekend at the Wicksteed 2010 event, my Steam Jet powered experimental boat had its maiden voyage (see Wicksteed 2010 page 10 for description - www.modelboatmayhem.co.uk ). Having developed a flash boiler for the Vital Byte experimental boat, I thought the light boiler could be used as the basis of a steam jet engine and last year tried out a couple of unsuccessful ideas and soon discovered that the steam condensed in the air before producing a force. Last February, I had the idea of expanding the steam through a nozzle into the very hot combustion gases of the boiler much in the same way as an exhauster on a steam loco which uses the cylinder exhaust steam to draw the fire in the furnace. A prototype engine (boiler? - I call it a Bengine) was built and gave an encouraging performance - the jet exhaust actually set alight a piece of wood! The "Bengine" was about 1200mm long though, quite impractical for a model boat. Then, as I was winding a flash boiler coil on a piece of 22mm copper pipe as a former, I had the bright idea of keeping the copper former as the exhaust pipe through which the steam jet would be aimed through. This exhaust pipe not only supported the boiler coil, but also passed back through the furnace and eventually was used as part of the butane/propane gas pre-heater. Using this arrangement the length was reduced to 350mm and also the construction was simplified. I built a "swinging" test rig to test the thrust produced by the Bengine and was ...

Wavestar is using advanced computer model to understand the physics in wave energy
Wavestar is using advanced computer model to understand the physics in wave energy
26 April 2012 our expert in hydrodynamics, Morten Kramer, presented our small scale experimental Wavestar model on a symposium "Advances in modelling of Wave Energy Devices" held at DTU in Copenhagen. By combining the experience from experimental tests with new and advanced computer models we will understand the physics in greater detail. Hereby we will become able to increase the power output from Wavestar even more, and at the same time reduce the costs.Wavestar is the strongest wave power concept. It leads the race to turn ocean power into unlimited clean energy. Test and research machines have been operating in the North Sea and the Danish fjords since 2006 and they are among the first wave energy machines to be connected to the grid. The commercial 500 kW machine will soon go into production. Wavestar will work in harmony with other clean energy methods to support the movement towards alternative and sustainable energy. Song of Stonehenge: Experimental Multimedia Archaeology
Song of Stonehenge: Experimental Multimedia Archaeology
This is a short film, exploring a 3D model of Stonehenge. It was made by Rupert Till, Ertu Unver and Andrew Taylor of the University of Huddersfield. It features a digital model of Stonehenge made using photographic scanning technology, linked to digital audio models of the site, so that it sounds as well as looks accurate. The instruments you hear are all experimental archaeological reconstructions of archaeological finds, of clay TRB drums from Europe, the Wilsford Flute, bone horns, bullroarers, all with the acoustic impulse response of Stonehenge at various points approaching and inside the site, added in. You will notice this is work in progress, the bank and ditch is inaccurate, and the ground has gaps in it. The stones have been placed on accurate LIDAR ground data. Future work will include making the stones sit accurately on the LIDAR ground data (some 'float' a bit); adding photographic textures to the stones; adding grass and trees in the right place using landsnail data; adding clouds, weather; making the bank and ditch more accurate; making the avenue more accurate. The film begins moving along the avenue, the ritual approach to Stonehenge. It is dusk on the 21st December, as the stones slowly approach over the horizon. You slow as you approach the Heel Stone. As you pass this you begin to hear the echoes and reverberation present in the central stone circle. When you get to the centre your spirit leaves your body and flies up and around the space. At the end ...

A 3D Simulator modelling for Hydraulic-drive Hexapod walking Robot using 3D Geometric Technique with distributed Numerical Model H. Ohroku, A. Irawan, K. Nonami Graduate School of Science and Technology,Chiba University 1-33 Yayoi-cho, Inage-ku, Chiba-shi, Chiba, 263-8522, Japan This article will describe the proposed method of 3D geometric combination with the designed numerical model distributed data. On the other hand this method is applied with the body movement coordination method (BMC) which is designed based on the centre of the body of the robot and shoulder of each leg point. The 3D model is designed for hydraulic-based drive hexapod walking robot which is critically to be experimented directly without any strong pre-study. Moreover the force-based controlled walking is the current research for this hydraulic-drive robot current version namely as COMET-IV. Therefore in this article, the discussion will be on the 3D geometric modelling with the force-based controlled numerical model that design with BMC technique. Simple walking experiment has been done to verify this simulator and the results are nearly same as simulated.

Experiment-based Modeling, Simulation and Validation of Interactions between Virtual Walkers
Experiment-based Modeling, Simulation and Validation of Interactions between Virtual Walkers
An interaction occurs between two humans when they walk with converging trajectories. They need to adapt their motion in order to avoid and cross one another at respectful distance. This paper presents a model for solving interactions between virtual humans. The proposed model is elaborated from experimental interactions data. We first focus our study on the pair-interaction case. In a second stage, we extend our approach to the multiple interactions case. Our experimental data allow us to state the conditions for interactions to occur between walkers, as well as each one's role during interaction and the strategies walkers set to adapt their motion. The low number of parameters of the proposed model enables its automatic calibration from available experimental data. We validate our approach by comparing simulated trajectories with real ones. We also provide comparison with previous solutions. We finally discuss the ability of our model to be extended to complex situations.

Epigenetics Animation
Animation on how mice are used to study changes in DNA that could also occur in humans and eventually lead to cancer. The genetic similarity of mice to humans accounts for mice being a good experimental model to study cancer. Mouse models that mimic human disease play a vital role in understanding the etiology (cause and origin) of cancer. Results of mouse model studies lend evidence toward the next step in biomedical research that leads to early detection of cancer, new cancer drugs, new combinations of treatments, or new methods such as gene therapy.
